I’m a San Francisco journalist and editor with a background in commercial and nonprofit media, and plenty of opinions about the challenges and issues of news, media, culture and democracy in the United States.

My background includes staff and freelance work for SFGate.com, Knight Ridder’s San Jose Mercury News, Wired Magazine and Meredith Corporation. I’ve also provided (mostly print!) editorial services to nonprofits such as Planet Drum Foundation, ArtSpan/San Francisco Open Studios, Media Alliance and others.

In 2000 I founded the commercial-free journalism project Newsdesk.org, and with Adam Myers and Jen Burke Anderson co-founded Independent Arts & Media, a free speech/civil society nonprofit that expands civic dialogue by increasing access to independent voices.

I’m also a longtime community radio DJ and talk-show producer at KUSF-FM, and over the years have served variously as the New Music program coordinator, community affairs director, publicity director and Web coordinator.
